Les Doms d’Alfred: a family adventure in an old water tower

In Montzen, Kindadom transforms an old railway reservoir into a place of exploration for families, in the heart of the Pays de Herve.

In Montzen, near the German and Dutch borders, an old railway water tank has changed function without losing its character. The Kindadom, one of Alfred's Doms accommodations, now welcomes families in a setting designed for playing, exploring, and spending time together.

A water tower turned holiday home

The building once served as a reservoir for the steam locomotives of the nearby railway line. Its conversion preserves this industrial identity while opening it up to unexpected uses: bedrooms in the former engine room, passages between levels, and spaces fitted out within the reservoir volumes.

The result is not a standard holiday rental decorated around an adventure theme. It is the building itself that creates the experience, with its heights, circulation spaces, and underground rooms.

A playground designed for several families

The Kindadom can accommodate up to six adults and eight children, spread across three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The indoor pool, games room, slides, and on-site puzzle give the stay a real sense of direction.

Naturally, younger children must stay accompanied in the unusual passageways. According to the owners, children enjoy the concept more freely from the age of four or five. Before booking, it is best to check that the layout suits the age, mobility, and level of independence of each traveler.

Comfort behind the setting

The spectacular character of the place does not replace practical amenities: a kitchen, communal areas, a garden, bicycle and stroller storage, as well as parking, make a group stay easier. The nearby railway is part of the landscape; freight trains are more frequent on weekdays and remain more noticeable outdoors.

To enjoy the place, allow time with no schedule. A large part of the appeal is precisely letting the children discover the spaces while the adults spend time together.

A gourmet break in Hombourg

Au Repère Gourmand, in Hombourg, is an easy stop after a walk or before continuing on your way. The address welcomes families, cyclists, and walkers near the RAVeL, offering breakfasts made with regional products, light meals, and sweet treats.

Days and opening hours change: when planning your getaway, check the official website and book in advance if possible, especially if you are traveling as a group.

Val-Dieu, between heritage and a stroll

Founded in 1216, the Abbey of Our Lady of Val-Dieu offers a peaceful counterpoint to the stay. Its park, basilica, and marked walking paths are freely accessible according to the estate's opening hours. The cloister and brewery can be explored on guided tours, which must be booked in advance.

For families, the park makes for an easy outing without requiring a long day of sightseeing. However, respect the peaceful atmosphere of the site and check the access rules before setting off.

Planning a stay at the Kindadom

  • Group makeup: the holiday home is designed for a maximum of 6 adults and 8 children; always confirm the permitted arrangement.
  • Young children: plan ahead for the supervision needed around ladders, slides, levels, and the pool.
  • Railway line: more freight trains run on weekdays; the noise is mainly noticeable outside.
  • On site: bring swimwear and shoes suitable for activities and walks.
  • Getting around: a car remains the most convenient way to explore the Pays de Herve and the Three Borders area.
  • Information: check prices, availability, conditions, and opening hours directly with the establishments before you leave.

A getaway that works because it leaves room for play

The Kindadom turns railway history into a family experience without erasing the building's traces. Between exploring the holiday home, a gourmet break, and a walk at Val-Dieu, the weekend can remain full of memories without turning into a race from one activity to the next.

That is probably the best way to approach the Doms d'Alfred: come for the unusual architecture, then take the time to really inhabit the place.
