Les Lodges de la Vierre: sleep by the water in the Ardennes
Wooden lodges, private boats, a car-free estate and gastronomy: prepare for a nature getaway at Domaine de Waillimont.
Between Herbeumont, Bertrix and Neufchâteau, the Domaine de Waillimont unfolds its meadows and woods around the Vierre. It is in this Ardennes landscape that the Lodges de la Vierre are located: wooden accommodations set by the water’s edge or on stilts, designed to let your stay move at the pace of nature.
An estate shaped by the Vierre
The original report presents an estate of 18 hectares crossed by the Vierre and set in a Natura 2000 environment. Meadows, undergrowth and pond create a setting that invites you to slow down as soon as you arrive.
This setting remains fragile. Walks must follow the authorized paths, respect the tranquility of wildlife and the rules communicated on site. The appeal of the stay comes precisely from this balance between comfort and immersion in a preserved landscape.
Leave the car at the entrance
The principle of the estate is simple: the car stays in the parking area at the entrance. Travel to the lodges is then done on foot or by cuistax. This choice reduces noise and immediately creates a calmer atmosphere.
For arrival, it is best to plan luggage that is easy to carry and confirm the arrangements planned to reach your accommodation. People with specific mobility needs should also inquire before booking.
Lodges designed for living together
The initial project includes fourteen wooden lodges, split between the riverbank and the stilted structures above the pond. Depending on their layout, they can accommodate a couple, a family or a small group.
Inside, the layout favors independence: equipped kitchen, dining area, lounge, one or more bedrooms and bathroom. The layouts and amenities may differ from one lodge to another; so compare the available categories for your dates carefully.
A boat to change perspective
The boat moored at the jetty is one of the hallmarks of the Lodges de la Vierre. It offers a different way to discover the pond and appreciate the calm of the site from the water.
Its use is naturally subject to weather conditions, safety instructions and the estate’s rules. Check on site the equipment provided and the access conditions before boarding, especially with children.
L’Épisode, the estate’s dining table
The restaurant L’Épisode complements the stay with cuisine rooted in local produce and the estate garden. Its location near the pond makes it possible to extend the experience without taking the car again.
The team, menus and opening days may change. Separate booking is recommended, especially if dinner is one of the highlights of the weekend.
Exploring the Semois valley
The Lodges de la Vierre offer an interesting base for exploring the south of the Ardennes. Rochehaut and its panorama over Frahan are among the best-known excursions. The Échelles walk offers a spectacular route, but some sections are steep and technical.
This hike is not suitable for all walkers or all weather conditions. Choose a route suited to the group, equip yourself properly and check the condition of the trails before setting out.
Stop at the Rochehaut Brewery
In Rochehaut, the brewery offers beers produced on site and friendly cuisine. The visible facilities also provide a glimpse into the brewing process and add a local dimension to the visit.
As the offer, tours and family-accessible spaces may change, check the current opening hours and conditions before going.
Preparing your stay well
- Location: Domaine de Waillimont, in the Herbeumont, Bertrix and Neufchâteau area.
- Accommodation: choose the capacity and layout of the lodge according to your group.
- Arrival: plan luggage that is easy to move between the parking area and the lodge.
- Restaurant: book L’Épisode separately and check its opening days.
- On the water: follow the estate’s instructions before using the boat.
- Hiking: adapt the route to the group’s abilities and the day’s conditions.
The right pace to enjoy the Lodges de la Vierre
The first day can be devoted entirely to the estate: settling in, a walk, time by the water and dinner. The next day is ideal for an outing in the Semois valley or around Rochehaut.
This arrangement prevents the getaway from turning into a constant rush. The Lodges de la Vierre make the most sense when you leave time for silence, landscapes and the simple life around the lodge.
