Sleeping in the ruins of a castle: a wellness getaway in Hesbaye

In Aische-en-Refail, two rooms set within the remains of a château combine old stone, a jacuzzi, a sauna, and getaways around Namur.

In Aische-en-Refail, in the heart of the Hesbaye countryside, Les Ruines du Château offer a stay that is truly out of the ordinary. Two contemporary guest rooms are set within a historic backdrop of brick and stone, each with its own approach to wellbeing.

A castle whose walls tell several centuries of history

The estate preserves traces of owners dating back to the 14th century. The castle was expanded between 1760 and 1780, then gradually abandoned after 1865 and damaged around the First World War. The site was listed in 1977 and the ruins were recognized as a monument in 1982.

This past has not been turned into an artificial set: vaults, irregular walls and old openings still structure the spaces. The renovation adds the necessary comfort without erasing the substance of the place.

La Charmante: bath, garden and jacuzzi

La Charmante favours a bright and gentle atmosphere. Its bathroom combines a freestanding bathtub and a shower, while the garden opens onto a private outdoor jacuzzi. It is the best option if your idea of a wellbeing stay involves a long bath followed by time outside.

L’Envoûtante: sauna under the tower

L’Envoûtante takes a more mineral approach. It includes a shower and a sauna combining infrared and steam, installed under the castle tower. The raw walls and more theatrical lighting create an enveloping atmosphere, very different from that of La Charmante.

Both rooms have private entrance, bathroom, Wi-Fi, Netflix, a mini-fridge and a hairdryer. They are connected by an underground corridor and can be rented together, an appealing option for two couples who want to share the place while keeping their independence.

Putting together a gourmet evening

Breakfast, brunch or aperitif platter options let you stay on site. For a gourmet dinner, the restaurant L’Air du Temps is located about 500 meters from the estate. In Namur, Attablez-Vous is another possibility, but menus, opening days and availability change: check with the establishments directly and book well in advance.

Taking in the heights in Namur

About twenty minutes by car away, the cable car links Namur’s historic centre to the esplanade of the Citadel. The ride is short, but the change in perspective over the rooftops, the Sambre and the Meuse makes it a pleasant introduction before a walk around the site.

Schedules and interruptions depend on the season, weather and maintenance. Check opening hours on the same day, especially if the cable car is the main focus of your outing.

Walking in the Furfooz nature reserve

For a more nature-focused day, the Furfooz reserve offers a trail through the Lesse valley, among rocks, caves and traces of human occupation. The terrain and some passages require good shoes; the actual duration will depend on your pace, stops and trail conditions.

Access is regulated and the arrangements may vary. Check the official information before setting out and stay on the designated paths to protect this fragile environment.

Planning your stay

  • Location: Aische-en-Refail, about 20 minutes from Namur and 15 minutes from Louvain-la-Neuve depending on the accommodation.
  • Room choice: outdoor jacuzzi for La Charmante, infrared and steam sauna for L’Envoûtante.
  • For two couples: ask to rent both rooms together and confirm access conditions for the shared corridor.
  • Rates: always check the price, included services and cancellation conditions when booking.
  • Restaurants: plan ahead for reservations, especially on weekends.
  • Outings: check the official opening hours of the cable car and Furfooz before setting off.

An address to slow down

The appeal of the stay comes less from an accumulation of activities than from the contrast between the ruins and the intimate comfort of the rooms. An evening on site, a carefully chosen table and a single excursion the next day are enough to create a balanced getaway.

By clearly choosing between jacuzzi and sauna, then checking the availability of visits, you can fully enjoy this unique place without turning the break into a timed schedule.
